LEADER: There are several prayers in Hebrew that we will say this evening. We have included the transliteration to make it easier for those of you who want to try your hand at Hebrew. Each table will choose a leader who will be responsible for serving the others the elements of the Passover. (Please choose the leader now.)

Our plight, not unlike those in Israel, has been deliverance from the bondage of oppression. Sin had us in bondage and we were servants to it. But now, through the miraculous deliverance we have received through Y’shua, the Passover Lamb of Adonai, we have been set free and given a sinless life. Romans 6:2-5 says, “…how can we who have died to sin still live in it? Don’t you know that those who have been immersed in to Messiah Y’shua have been immersed into death? Through immersion into His death we were buried with Him, so that just as, through the glory of the Father, the Messiah was raised from the dead, likewise we too live a new life”. Tonight is your opportunity to put yourself there, in Egypt and realize that you are on your way to Mt. Sinai to receive Adonai’s Word in your heart forever. All quotations from the Scriptures come from the Complete Jewish Bible by David H. Stern, 1998.

Reader: “Also taking a piece of Matzah, He made the B’rakhah (blessing), broke it, gave it to them and said, “this is my body which is being given for you; do this in memory of me”. (Luke 22:19)

Leader: Opens Passover With Prayer – Hadlakat Nerot – Candle Lighting

Leader: Light is the symbol of Adonai’s presence. Lighting candles during Holy Days and Shabbat remind us that Adonai is our light. It is also written in Genesis that the offspring of a woman would crush the serpent’s head. “I will put animosity between you (the serpent) and the woman and between your descendant and her descendant; he will bruise your head and you will bruise his heel”. (Genesis 3:15)

Woman: (Delilah) Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha’Olam asher kid-shah-nu b’mitz-vo-tav v’tzi’vah-nu l’had-leek nair shel yom tov. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by your commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the Festival lights. Amen.

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloiheynu Melech Ha’olam, she-heh-khee-yahnu, v’ kee-yeh-mah-nu, v’hig-ee-yah-nu, laz-mahn ha-zeh. Bless are You Oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us in life, preserved us, and has enabled us to reach this season. Amen.

Leader: Note: the above prayers are spoken by a woman. The celebration of the Sabbath (all Holy Feasts of Israel are Sabbatical Days), when the candles are lit, is always done by a woman. As it is by the seed of a woman, our Sabbath, our Messiah, was born. As the prophet Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be born of an “Almah” (a virgin or woman of marriageable age). She would conceive a son and call his name “Immanuel” meaning “God is with us”. A light to bring light to the gentiles (non-Jewish people) and the glory of my people Israel.

Leader: The Seder plate has many items that we will use to experience the Passover using our senses. We will now begin reading the Haggadah, which means “the telling”. We are called to celebrate the Passover-Jew and non-Jew, for Y’shua said, “ Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. Yes, indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah- not until everything that must happen has happened. So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvoth (commandments) and teaches others to do so, will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim (Pharisees), you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven”! (Matthew 5: 17-20). In addition, Exodus 12:48 which specifically denies the celebration of the Passover to the uncircumcised has been amended by the following Scripture, “For circumcision is indeed of value if you do what the Torah says, but if you are a transgressor of the Torah, your circumcision has become uncircumcision! Therefore if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the Torah, won’t his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? (Romans 2:26) Our circumcision is not a physical one. Our righteousness is in our faith in the shed blood of the Passover Lamb, Y’shua the Messiah.

Reader: Adonai said to Moshe, “ now you will see what I am going to do to Pharaoh. With a mighty hand he will send them off; with force he will drive them from the land! “ (Exodus 6:1)

All Together: “Therefore, say to the people of Israel: I am Adonai. I will free you from the forced labor of the Egyptians, rescue you from their oppression, and redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am Adonai, who freed you from the forced labor of the Egyptians.” (Exodus 6:6,7)

Leader: During the Passover Seder, we will drink four glasses of wine (tonight its grape juice). They are: the cup of sanctification, the cup of plagues, the cup of redemption and the cup of praise. They also represent the four “I wills” as we just read together above in Exodus 6: 6-7. I will bring you out from under the Egyptian burden; I will deliver you from bondage to slavery of sin; I will redeem you unto Myself; and I will take you to be my people”

Reader: For us, fulfillment of these cups of remembrance bring us out of the burden of sin and death; then we are delivered by Y’shua’s shed blood at Calvary just as the blood the Lamb was shed to protect Israel from the death Angel.

Yochanon saw Y’shua coming toward him and said, ‘Look, Adonai’s Lamb; the One who is taking away the sins of the world”. Then Adonai redeemed Israel unto Himself just as He has done for us; and finally He has declared Himself to be our God, not only as individuals, but as part of His family. (Yochanon 1:29)

Reader: “For if we deliberately continue to sin after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but only the terrifying prospect of judgment, of raging fire that will consume the enemies (of Adonai). Someone who disregards the Torah of Moshe is put to death on the word of two or three witnesses; think how much worse will be the punishment deserved by someone who has trampled under foot the Son of Adonai; who has treated as something common the blood of the covenant which made him holy; who has insulted the Spirit, giver of Adonai’s grace”. (Hebrews 10: 26-29)

Reader: “When the time came, Y’shua and their emissaries reclined at the table, and he said to them, ‘I have really wanted so much to celebrate this Seder with you before I die. For I tell you, it is certain that I will not celebrate it again until it is given its full meaning in the Kingdom of Adonai. Then, taking the cup, he made the B’rakhah (blessing) and said, ‘Take this and share it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on, I will not drink the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of Adonai comes.” (Luke 22: 14-18)

Leader: Sanctification is the first step to our salvation. Adonai is holy and we cannot enter His presence with a sinful nature. He established a sacrificial system to cleanse us from the presence of sin in our nature. Y’shua is the ultimate sacrifice that enables us, through our faith in his shed blood, to enter into Adonai’s presence. May it be that we all are sanctified through the blood of Y’shua, our Passover Lamb. Let us all now fill the first cup of sanctification, say the prayer together.

All Together: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-Olam borey p’ree ha-gaw-fan. Blessed are you O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. (Leaning to the left: Drink the entire contents of the cup). We lean to the left in a reclining position to remember that we had little or no time when Israel was forced out of Egypt. Now we recline to savor the moment.

Hand Washing (at head table) Oo-R’chatz

Leader: “Who may go up to the mountain of Adonai? Who can stand in His Holy Place? Those with clean hands and pure hearts, who don’t make vanities for the purpose of their lives or swear oaths just to deceive. They will receive a blessing from Adonai”. (Psalm 24: 3-5a). The leader now washes his hands but no blessing is recited.

Reader: “but the people of Israel still groaned under the yoke of slavery, and they cried out, and their cry for rescue from slavery came up to Adonai. Adonai heard their groaning and Adonai remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Adonai saw the people of Israel and Adonai acknowledged them”.

(Exodus 2:23b-25)

Leader: We will take the parsley (called Karpas) and we will dip it TWICE into the salt water. We do this to symbolize the tears and pain of the Israelites. So we are reminded that a life without redemption is a life immersed in tears. If you are redeemed by Y’shua’s blood, your tears are tears of joy.

All together: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-Olam, boray p’ree ha-ah-dah-mah. Blessed are you Oh Lord our God, King of the Universe who has created the fruit of the earth. Now dip the parsley twice and eat it.

Leader: We traditionally put three matzot on our Seder plate. It is unclear why there are three matzot on the plate as well as it is unclear why we break the middle matzah. One half is put back while the other half is wrapped in a linen cloth. After the hiding of the Afikomen (soon children will be asked to close their eyes while it is being hidden), we hold up the matzah tosh and uncover all the matzah saying; This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt; let all those who are hungry, enter and eat thereof; and all who are in distress, come and celebrate the Passover. At present we celebrate it here in the Golus (dispersion), but next year we hope to celebrate it in the land of Israel.

Possible explanations for the three matzot are the three Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Also, Abba, Y’shua and the Ruach Hakodesh (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit). Let’s look at 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 for answers. Also look closely at the Matzah and you will see stripes and piercing that is there to kept the bread from rising, a clear sign against rising or leavening. We believe this to represent the suffering of Messiah at Calvary as he was pierced (Zechariah 12:10) and by his striped we were healed (1 Peter 2:24 and Isaiah 53:5).

Reader: …Don’t you know the saying, ‘it takes a little hametz (leaving) to leaven a whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old hametz so that you can be a new batch of dough because in reality you are unleavened. For our Pesach Lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate the Seder not with left over hametz, the hametz of wickedness and evil but with the Matzah of purity and truth. (1 Corinthians 5: 6b-8)

Leader: Instruct the children to close their eyes and hide the Afikomen. We can look at this as Y’shua’s body which is broken for us. It is hidden(as in the tomb) only to be resurrected and revealed.

All Together: In haste we went out of Egypt.

Leader: Now as we begin to tell the story of the Passover, we recite together the Shema, a prayer of declaration of our loyalty to the One God.

All Together: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheynu Adonai Echad. Hear, Israel! Adonai our God, Adonai is One. We continue through verse 9 in English. And you are to love Adonai, your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. These words which I am ordering you today are to be on your heart; and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband on your forehead, and write them on the doorframe of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

Leader: Fill the second cup.

Young Person: He rises to ask the Four Questions:

Mah Nish Tahn-aw Ha-lai-law ha-zeh mee-kol ha-ley-lote! How is this night different than all other nights?

1. On all other nights we eat either leavened or unleavened bread; on this night why only unleavened bread?.

2. On all other nights we eat herbs of any kind; on this night why only bitter herbs?

3. On all other nights we do not dip herbs even once; on this night why do we dip twice?

4. On all other nights we eat our meal in any manner; on this night why do we sit around the table together in a reclining position?

The oldest person replies: We were slaves to Pharoah in Egypt and the Lord redeemed us with His mighty hand. If the Holy and Blessed One had not taken our ancestors out of Egypt, then we, our children and grandchildren, too, would be slaves in Egypt. This is why, even though we may have wisdom, we might know Torah well, it is our duty to tell the story of the Exodus. It is to give honor and glory to the One who brought us out of Egypt. Tonight we remember the going forth of our people out of Egypt. In haste, as we fled, there was no time to wait to bake the bread or for the yeast to rise. The parsley in salt water reminds of springtime’s green. The bitter herbs remind us of slavery’s tears. The Charoseth recalls the sweetness of the hope of freedom. Finally, free men recline while slaves often stood and ate. Now, in our freedom, we recline.

Child Asks: Why did these ten plagues come upon the Egyptians?

Leader: The gods of Egypt were shown as animals and birds. No living person was able to look upon their gods. So to remind them of their gods, they claimed the gods inhabited animals and birds so the people could be close to them. The plagues were to show just how powerless these so-called gods were. By turning the Nile into blood, Hopi, the Nile god of fertility was shown powerless. Frogs depicted the weakness of the frog-headed god Hek. Lice showed the defeat of the god, Leb. The wild beasts (beetles) defeated Khepara, the beetle fly god. Apis, the sacred bull, Dever was defeated when the cattle were destroyed. Boils exposed the Egyptian goddess Neit who lived in an Acacia tree. The water god Iris was defeated by the plague of hail. Locusts took over the air exposing the weakness of Shu, the air god. Darkness illuminated Ra, the sun god, as a fraud. Finally, Osiris, god of the dead lost control when the firstborn of all animals and men died. We remember this by taking a drop of wine (juice) onto our plate as we name each of the ten plagues.. DAM – blood; Z’FARDEYAH- Frogs; KINIM – Lice; AROV – Beetles; DEVER – Cattle; SC’CHIEN – Boils; BARAD – Hail; ARBEH – Locusts; CHOSHECH – Darkness; MAHKAT B’KOROT – First Born

All Together: Adonai brought us forth from Egypt with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm; with great terror; with signs and wonders.

Leader: Rabbi Gamaliel used to say: “Whoever does not explain the following three symbols at the Seder on Pesach has not fulfilled his duty:

The Passover Offering (The Lamb Bone)

The Matzah

The Bitter Herbs

Avinu Malkenu, Maker of all things, Ruling o’er the works of your hands. You loved us so, You sent Your Son, to take our sin and shame; Our Father in Heaven, Holy is Your name.

Messiah Y’shua, Redeemer of mankind, righteousness and truth are all your ways, a sacrifice, you died and rose, atonement for our sin; Y’shua the Lamb of God and our coming King.

Ruach HaKodesh, Spirit of our God, come from heaven above to lead the way, our Comforter, our Teacher, showing us our sin; empower us in holiness, make us pure within.

Adoneinu Malkenu, mighty Lord and King, we will trust in You and You alone; we worship You and honor You for the things You’ve done; Echad Eloheynu, Holy Three in One, Echad Eloheynu, Holy Three in One.
